Wernher von Braun Typed Letter Signed with Three-Line Holograph Postscript. A one page letter on NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center letterhead, 8" x 10.5", November 8, 1961, Huntsville, Alabama, to Mr. M. M. Turner, president of Roscoe Turner Aeronautical Corporation of Indianapolis, Indiana. In full: "Dear Mr. Turner: It was very thoughtful of you to send me the clippings from the/ Indianapolis newspapers concerning my visit there and my speech at/ DePauw University. I just wanted to take this means to thank you and/ to tell you that I appreciated receiving them for my scrapbook./ Best regards./ Sincerely yours,/ [signed] Wernher von Braun". Beneath he has added a handwritten note: "P.S! And let me thank you again for/ taking us out to lunch. I enjoyed/ our discussion immensely." Original transmittal envelope is included. Very fine condition with original light mailing folds and minor chipping at two edges. At this point in time the U.S. Space program was in its infancy; the United States had launched only two manned space missions, Freedom 7 and Liberty Bell 7 (both sub-orbital). Just days before von Braun's speech at DePauw, the first launch of the Saturn I rocket had taken place. His speech there to 2500 students emphasized the importance of young men and women to the future of the space race. He spoke of the Saturn I launch and talked about even more powerful rockets being developed. A reprint of the front page of The Depauw student newspaper dated November 3, 1961, reporting on his speech is included with this lot.
