Wernher von Braun Signed Letter of Condolence to Theodore Freeman's Widow. A one page typed letter on NASA Marshall Space Flight Center letterhead, 8" x 10.25", not dated [1964], Huntsville, Alabama. Freeman, part of NASA's third group of astronauts, perished in a plane crash on October 31, 1964, as he was flying back from a visit to the McDonnell-Douglas training facility in Saint Louis; he was the first fatality among the American astronaut corps. This heartfelt letter reads in full:

    "Dear Mrs. Freeman:

"We were all shocked and grieved to learn of the untimely passing of your husband, Captain Freeman. We offer to you and to Faith our most sincere sympathy.

"We at Huntsville knew Ted better than we know many of his contemporaries because our task was of special interest to him. He worked very closely with Dr. Joachim Kuettner on the Crew Safety Panel. We shall miss him personally - we shall miss him professionally. But we shall remember him as a man on whom his humility and modesty put the mark of greatness.

"We know that you and your daughter have continually demonstrated your faith and your courage in the face of danger to your beloved. May the same faith and courage sustain you now.

"Sincerely [signed] Wernher von Braun Director"

    Flattened mailing folds, very fine.
