Four pages in pencil, 5" x 8", no place, December 26 [docketed 1870], marked "Private". He is seeking speaking engagements in which he would be paid. In part: "I have spoken both the Sundays that I have been out here, gratis. I find they will have me talk. I cannot skulk. Now if I am to speak there is no reason I should not get pay for it..." Phillips (1811-1884) was the principal spokesperson for the anti-slavery movement in America from the 1830s until African Americans received the right to vote in 1870. He then turned his passions and oratorical skills toward women's rights, temperance, and other social issues. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.
