    Description

Tombstone, Arizona: Assorted Ephemera. Extensive collection of paper items related to Tombstone. The binder includes postcards, documents, receipts, correspondence, photographs, etc. We count thirty-seven [37] postcards, many of them real photo, sold at souvenir shops and trading posts. There is a boudoir card landscape by C. S. Fly and four cabinet cards of civilians. The material dates from the 1870s through the mid-20th century. There is research material that gives background information to items in the archive. We count sixteen [16] letters, many bank and merchant receipts, including some related to the Goldwater family of Arizona, ancestors of Senator Barry Goldwater. There is an 1882 check endorsed by Milton E. Joyce, proprietor of the Oriental Saloon in Tombstone and partner with Wyatt Earp in the faro concession. In October 1880, he got into a fight with Doc Holliday, resulting in Holiday's arrest and $20 fine. There are several mining-related manuscripts. An 1882 government-printed document is titled "Lawlessness in Arizona" and contains President Arthur's Message. Some of the subjects include: Edward Harry Dean (manager of the Oriental Saloon), newspaperman Ridgeley Tilden, Richard Gird (founder and first mayor of Tombstone), lawman John H. Slaughter, John F. Crowley (deputy sheriff and co-owner of the O.K. Corral), Frank B. Austin (owner of the "Papago Cash Store" and witness to the gunfight at the O.K. Corral), Robert S. Hatch (sheriff, livery & saloon owner who was playing pool with Morgan Earp when Earp was assassinated), Mayor A. H. Emanuel and others. The vast majority of items date from the 19th century. Some items relate to San Francisco, Fairbank and Bisbee, Arizona, but these are very few in number. Nearly everything is Tombstone-related. A great resource of original material. From the Estate of Robert (Bobby) Palazzo, Westlake Village, Ca.
