Susan B. Anthony Typed Letter Signed "Susan B. Anthony". One page, 8.25" x 11", Rochester, New York, March 28, 1900, to Samuel E[berly] Gross, Chicago. Ms. Anthony thanks Mr. Gross for a birthday gift and commends his wife's appearance at a recent gala held in Washington, D.C. on the occasion of Anthony's eightieth birthday. With a holograph postscript, the letter has the usual fold creases and is toned at the edges with small staple holes in the upper left corner, otherwise it is in very good condition. Included is Gross's one page, April 17, 1900 typed letter in response. He offers to present a petition on her behalf to the executive committee of the Sons of the American Revolution at their upcoming annual meeting. Gross was a Chicago real estate developer. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.

    More Information:

    She writes in part:

"It was lovely of you to send me that reminder that you were in spirit, as well as by representation of your 'Maud' with us in the festivities of that birthday. I wish you could have seen how splendidly Mrs. Gross acted her part all the afternoon and evening. Not one of the three thousand women who passed through the Corcoran Art Gallery could over-top that lady's elegant costume." Anthony adds a hand-written post-script: "P. S. Oh yes - I am in possession of a very pretty spectacle case to hang at the belt. Thanks for that also.".
