Atlantis was the fourth operational shuttle spacecraft. The maiden voyage was STS-51-J, launching on October 3, 1985. Its thirty-third and final mission, STS-135, launched July 8, 2011. This was also the final mission of the entire Space Shuttle program. Atlantis was the first shuttle to launch an interplanetary probe (Magellan to Venus on STS-30 and Galileo to Jupiter on STS-34). A total of 156 persons flew on Atlantis in its twenty-six years of service, flying 126 million miles and 4848 earth orbits. Plans are that Atlantis will spend its retirement on display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
