    Description

First man and woman in space, first spacewalker

Soviet Cosmonauts Vintage Color Photo Signed by the First Eleven to Fly in Space. A 9" x 5.625" color photo with signatures in the wide bottom margin of the following: Yuri Gagarin (the first man in space), Gherman Titov, Andrian Nikolayev, Pavel Popovich, Valery Bykovsky, Valentina Tereshkova (the first woman in space), Vladimir Komarov, Konstantin Feoktistov, Boris Yegorov, Pavel Belyayev, and Alexei Leonov (the first spacewalker). These are all the cosmonauts who flew in the Vostok and Voskhod programs. The photo is quite faded from exposure to light and three of the signatures are also light. Included is a 12" x 9.5" original 1965-dated (on verso) glossy press color photo of the same image. Creative matting could make this into a fine display as all the signatures are totally inside the margin. Incredibly rare grouping. Flaws noted.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
