    Sir Moses Montefiore Letter Twice Signed. One page, 8" x 10", on his personal letterhead, handwritten in Hebrew, [London], 1877. Writing to Rabbi David Ben-Shimon, Sir Moses Montefiore, 1st Baronet, is transmitting three pounds to the Talmud Torah school in Jerusalem and asks that Shimon confirm one the money arrives in his hands. Signed in English and in Hebrew. Heavily damaged at the left edge; a large portion of the upper left corner is removed. Area of staining along the horizontal fold.

    Montefiore (1784-1885) was a British banker and financier who served for a time as Sheriff of London. After his retirement, he turned to philanthropy, sending large amounts of money to Jews living in Palestine.
