    Description

Robert R. Gilruth Gemini-Era Photo and Typed Letter Signed. A 20" x 16" mounted B&W photo (S66-32629), one of Patnesky's more dramatic images, taken May 17, 1966, at a tension-filled press conference in Houston just after the Gemini 9 Atlas Agena failure. Pictured from left to right are: Dr. Charles Berry, Deke Slayton, Gene Kranz, Charles Matthews, William Schneider, Lt. General Leighton Davis, Dr. Gilruth, and Dr. George Meuller. Included is a very complimentary one page typed letter signed to Patnesky from Gilruth, 8" x 10.5" on NASA letterhead, dated December 12, 1966. It reads, in part: "With the completion of the Gemini program, I want to say a special word of thanks to you for your work in the news center in support of the program... Your work has brought favorable comment from the highest officials of NASA, as well it should because your performance reflects credit on the Agency and the Center. To you, I say: Well done!" He has signed "Robert R Gilruth" at the close and added a handwritten note: "Pat- you know how/ great we all feel your/ artistry with a Camera is!/ RRG". Both excellent. From the personal collection of longtime NASA photojournalist Andrew "Pat" Patnesky.
