    Robert E. and Mary Custis Lee: Hand-Tinted Cartes-de-Visite [CDVs] Accomplished and Signed by Mrs. Lee. Pair of cartes, one with M. Miley of Lexington back mark, the other with A. M. Hall of Alexandria back mark. Both are signed by "Mary Custis Lee". One is inscribed "Genl. R. E. Lee when a Capt of Engineers in the U.S. Army retouched for the Memorial Church at Lexington." The other reads: "Tinted for my dear Mrs. Cohen by her friend Mary Custis Lee, Warm Springs 28th July 1873". Sold together with a Washington College envelope postmarked June 30 [1869], addressed to General Lucius Deshau, in which the CDVs were found. The image of Robert E. Lee is a copy of one of the altered "West Point" portraits of Lee produced after the war as a vignetted upper chest view.
