Rain-in-the-Face Autographed Broadside. This 4" x 8" broadside reprints a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow titled "The Revenge of Rain-in-the-Face." The eight stanzas deal with the Battle of Little Bighorn, the death of George Armstrong Custer and his men. "Revenge! Cried Rain-in-the-Face/ Revenge upon all the race/ Of the White Chief with yellow hair/ And the mountains dark and high/ From their crags re-echoed the cry/ Of his anger and despair." The poster announces that "Rain-in-the-Face is now on exhibition at the Sitting Bull Log Cabin Exhibit on Midway Plaisance next to Military Camp, World's Fair grounds." With their lands confiscated and communities destroyed, many Native American leaders were forced to ply the show circuit, appearing as "exhibits" and selling autographs. This piece was indeed autographed in pencil by the Sioux warrior. The circumstances surrounding it are typewritten below, indicating it was obtained at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Broadside has an internal tear and folds, but is generally in very fine condition. Autographs of Rain-in-the-Face appear much less frequently than those of Sitting Bull or Geronimo.
