Pete Maxwell: A Rare Signature of the Owner of the House in which Billy the Kid was Killed. Following his daring escape Billy had been on the loose for some three months when Pat Garrett received a tip that he had been spotted in the area of Fort Sumner, New Mexico. With two deputies Garrett set out to question one of the town's residents, Pete Maxwell, who was known to be a friend of the Kid. Late on the evening of July 14, 1881, Garrett sat talking with Maxwell in his house when Billy the Kid unexpectedly walked in. What followed remains shrouded in controversy, but the Kid ended up with a bullet fired by Garrett in his chest and died almost instantly.

Offered here is an 1882 order for provisions boldly signed by Maxwell. The left edge of the lined paper is dog-eared as shown, but otherwise excellent condition. 7.5" x 9.5".
