Oath of Office of Richmond, Missouri Deputy Sheriff Frank Griffin, Killed in the James Gang's Brazen Robbery of the Town's Bank on May 22, 1867. In one of the most violent such robberies on record, the citizens of Richmond attempted to stop the robbers as they fled the scene. The mayor, John B. Shaw was shot seven times and killed as he tried to rally the town's citizens. Griffin and his father B. G. Griffin, the town jailer, were also killed in the gun battle. After their escape the robbers split up, but were quickly tracked by posses. One, Payne Jones, was killed in a gun battle. Three others were apprehended and lynched by vigilantes. The James brothers had been identified as participants in the robbery, but before the vigilantes came to the James farm Jesse and Frank issued statements that they had nothing to do with the Richmond raid. Such was the popular affection for the former guerillas in that part of Missouri that, amazingly, they were taken at their word and not molested.Offered here is Frank Griffin's signed oath of office, also signed by the sheriff, A. K. Rayburn, who had taken over that office after the previous sheriff refused to take a loyalty oath at the conclusion of the Civil War. We can find no mention of Rayburn's presence the day the bank was robbed, however. 7.75" x 9", and in excellent condition.
