    Neil Armstrong Typed Letter Signed to West Point Superintendent Regarding Army Football Games. An 8.5" x 11" letter on his personal Lebanon, Ohio, letterhead, August 23, 1982, to Willard W. Scott, Jr./ Lieutenant General, USA/ Superintendent/ United States Military Academy, West Point, New York. Text, in full: "Dear General Scott:/ Thank you for your kind invitation to attend football/ games on the forthcoming United States Military Academy/ schedule./ I do not anticipate being able to attend any games this/ year, but will notify your office immediately should the/ opportunity arise./ Best wishes for the success of the 1982 season./ Sincerely,/ [signed] Neil Armstrong/ Neil A. Armstrong". At the bottom of the letter two stamps have been affixed- the 1969 10ยข "First Man on the Moon" (Scott #C76) and the 1989 $2.40 "Moon Landing" (Scott #2419), with a First Day of Issue cancellation dated July 20, 1989. Very fine with flattened mailing folds and a staple hole at upper left.

    Lieutenant General Willard W. Scott, Jr. was the Superintendent of West Point from 1981 to 1986 and was known as a fervent supporter of Army football. During games, he would often ride the mascot mule down the sidelines leading cheers and waving his saber to celebrate touchdowns. One of the Academy's mules was named General Scott (or "Scotty") in his honor.
