    Description

Neil Armstrong: Large Signed Limited Edition Paul Calle Lithograph, #729/1000. An 18.5" x 27" (sight size) B&W lithographed pencil sketch of Neil Armstrong as he suited up on July 16, 1969, for his rendezvous with history. It is matted and framed (no glass) to an overall 24" x 32.5". Paul Calle was one of eight artists chosen by NASA in 1962 to document the U.S. space program and was the only artist present when the crew of Apollo 11 prepared for launch. His design was chosen for the "First Man on the Moon" postage stamp celebrating Armstrong's momentous first step. Armstrong and Calle both signed this print in pencil on December 23, 1976, when it went on sale at the National Air and Space Museum to raise money for the Charles Lindbergh Memorial Fund. Please note that this lithograph was damaged while in transit to us by broken glass. There are several surface scratches on the print, notably one of 3" in length across Neil's communications headset and into his cheek. Three other smaller scratches on his image are much less noticeable. A few additional surface flaws are in the background area and barely visible. The easily-replaced mat has some damage to the beveled edges and some surface dings. There is absolutely no damage in the area of the signatures and the overall appearance is fine. A paper restorer could mitigate all the flaws noted above.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
