    NEIL ARMSTRONG

Neil Armstrong and Six Additional X-15 Pilots Signed Large Photo in Framed Display. A 13.5" x 10.5" photo of a parked NASA / Air Force X-15 rocket-powered aircraft elaborately and archivally matted and framed to an overall 20.75" x 13.75". Seven of the twelve men to ever fly this plane have boldly signed in black felt tip above its image (alphabetical order):

Neil Armstrong: Seven total flights, signed "Neil Armstrong". Astronaut.
Scott Crossfield: Fourteen total flights, signed "Scott Crossfield".
William H. Dana: Sixteen total flights. Signed: "Bill Dana". Astronaut wings earned.
Joseph H. Engle: Sixteen total flights. Signed: "Joe Engle". Astronaut wings earned. Astronaut.
William J. Knight: Sixteen total flights. Signed: "William J Knight". Astronaut wings earned.
Milton O. Thompson: Fourteen total flights. Signed: "Milt Thompson".
Robert M. White: Sixteen total flights. Signed: "Bob White". Astronaut wings earned.

The X-15 rocket-powered aircraft set numerous speed and altitude records in the 1960s, reaching the edge of space and bringing back valuable data for use in developing later aircraft and spacecraft. NASA awards astronaut wings to anyone who flies above fifty miles altitude; the recipients are noted above. Of course, Neil Armstrong and Joe Engle participated also in the U.S. space program, with Armstrong earning his astronaut wings later. This is a gorgeous piece; the photo was obtained in 1993 through the Flight Test Historical Foundation at Edwards AFB. Excellent.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
