    Description

Linus Pauling Typed Letter Signed and Insert. One page, 8.5" x 11", on his personal letterhead, Pasadena, California, November 6, 1957. Addressed to "Dr. Land," likely Edwin H. Land, an American scientist and co-founder of Polaroid Corporation, regarding a petition he co-wrote appealing for an international abolition of nuclear weapons, in part:

"On 15 May 1957, with the help of Professors Barry Commoner and Edward U. Condon . . . I wrote an appeal to the governments and people of the world to reach an international agreement to stop the testing of nuclear bombs, as a first step toward a more general disarmament . . . decreasing the possibility of a great nuclear war. Within a short time this appeal had been signed by more than 2000 American scientists. . . . Now I am hoping to obtain more signatures . . . A copy of the appeal is enclosed. I hope that you will sign it and return it to me before 1 December . . . I propose at some later time . . . to send a statement about the appeal and its support by scientists to the United Nations and to the leaders of nations, and to make a public announcement about it . . . to encourage the world toward finding ways of solving world problems other than by war and the threat of war."

Included in this lot is the "Appeal by American Scientists to the Governments and People of the World" laying out the dangers of the "added burden of radioactive elements over every part of the world" and the "damage to the health of human beings all over the world" through the testing of nuclear weapons.

In all, the appeal was signed by 11,021 scientists in fifty countries. For his efforts, Linus Pauling (1901-1994) won his second Nobel Prize, this time for peace, in 1962. His first Nobel Prize win was for chemistry in 1954.

Condition: Smoothed folds. Both sheets have small staple holes in the upper left corner. The letter has two chips and one .5" tear at the left edge.
