Leonid Sobinov Autograph Letter Signed "Leonid Sobinov," (In Russian). Two pages, 5.25" x 8", np, September 11, 1908. This letter is written entirely in Russian, and is signed by the famous Russian tenor, Leonid Sobinov. Sobinov was working as a lawyer when one of his voice teachers recommended that he go to an audition at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1897. This earned him a two-year contract and several appearances in large operas, including: Ruslan and Laudmila, Faust, Manon, Prince Igor, and Rigoletto. He was one of the first significant artists to have his voice recorded. The recordings still exist today and are in good condition. Many accounts by conductors, fans, and theater workers describe them in tears and sobbing at Sobinov's performances. He rewrote and revolutionized many traditional roles. The letter in this lot is untranslated; accompanying the letter is several printed pages with a biography of Sobinov and scanned images of him in his costumes of some of his more famous roles.
The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
