Johnson County War: An 1889 Surety Bond for James Huff, Signed by Andrew S. Brown, a Prominent Figure in the War. Huff was one of those "fluid" characters who popped up in the "War." At one time linked to the small ranches and homesteaders, he was deputized in Johnson County late in 1892 to prevent further killings and acts of revenge.

In this 1889 document Brown and Thomas A. Adams put up a $500 bail bond for James Huff, who then was accused of stealing livestock. A colorful character, Brown was described as "a large, powerful man and somewhat belligerent." When the Johnson County War broke out he sided with the "nesters" against the cattlemen. After the cattlemen's henchmen had killed Champion and Ray at the KC Ranch they were trapped at the TA Ranch by men led by Brown and Elias Snider. Fierce fighting and a siege ensued before the arrival of U.S. Cavalry forces. It was said that Brown was killed by Frank Canton and Bill McCann, "shot to death, his body thrown across his wood pile and burned to a crisp." However, another report had him murdered in Powder River country, while yet another establishes his death as occurring nearly a decade later in 1901.
The document, signed by Huff and Brown, is in excellent condition and measures 8.25" x 14".
