    Description

John Jacob Astor Sr. Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages with integral address leaf, 8" x 10", Hellgate [New York], August 6, 1835. Writing to his young granddaughter, Emily, Astor keeps the letter lighthearted as he relates news from the family, in part: "Eliza and Luisa remained with me 14 days . . . Irving came and is now with me. Poor Charles had a deal of trouble since you left here. He very imprudently left the school without leave and was unwilling to go back. . . . I hope John is making good use of his time, he ought to write me. I trust you will not forget your promise and pass some weeks more with me before the summer is over." Astor, an investor and the United States' first multi-millionaire, amassed his fortune through his American Fur Company, buying furs from trappers and Indians. By 1800, he began trading for tea, sandalwood, and opium from China. In order to ensure the safety and continued profitability of his operation, he placed into his debt politicians experiencing financial difficulties. Smoothed folds with light ink bleedthrough. Carefully inset into a larger archival sheet to an overall size of 8.5" x 10.5".
