John J. Audubon Autograph Letter Signed "J. J. Audubon." One page, 8" x 10", "Lauriston [Edinburgh, Scotland]," July 1838. Writing to an unknown female recipient, the famed ornithologist and artist writes to decline a dinner invitation, in part: "To dine quietly with you all on Friday would afford me great pleasure, but I am denied the accepting of you kind Invitation, because I have an engagement on that day with my friend . . . who has come from Charleston South Carolina to pay me a . . . visit." The remainder of the letter concerns family news. Audubon was in Scotland working on the companion work to his best-seller, The Birds of America, called the American Ornithological Biography, co-written with Scottish naturalist and ornithologist, William McGillvray. Usual folds with spots of light foxing. Mounted to a backing sheet.

John James Audubon (1785-1851), the Haitian-born Frenchman who spent most of his life in the United States, is, without question, the greatest and most influential painter of birds in the history of ornithological illustration. The Birds of America took twelve years (1827-1838) of meticulous work to complete.
