The first American to orbit the Earth.

John Glenn: A Memoir Signed and Numbered Limited Edition with an Original Printing of His 1962 Testimony before the Senate, "Orbital Flight of John H. Glenn, Jr." Two items: (1) A leather bound signed and limited first edition, #2852 of 3500, of his 1999 autobiography. John Glenn: A Memoir (Norwalk, Connecticut: Easton Press, 1999), 422 pages, 6.5" x 9.5", gilt-stamped black leather covers with all edges gilt. In this book, "the former senator takes us on a compelling journey through a most remarkable life. From an Ohio childhood steeped in traditional values to the cockpits of fighter planes and spacecraft, Glenn reveals how integrity, dedication, and ambition made an ordinary American boy become a 'hero.'" As new condition; (2) Senate Document No 79 from the second session of the 87th Congress, a report of the "Hearing before the Senate Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences/ Testimony of Astronauts and NASA Officials Held on February 28, 1962" (Washington: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1962), 126 pages, 5.75" x 9", staplebound. Note that this hearing took place only eight days after Glenn's orbital flight. Glenn testified that he was able to control his capsule and could navigate using the stars. He gave an opinion that less computer control and more human piloting were the way to space, at least for the foreseeable future. This rare printing includes the testimonies of not only Glenn, but also Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom. One interesting inclusion is the statement made by President John F. Kennedy on the day of Glenn's flight, in part: "I know that I express the great happiness and thanksgiving of all of us that Colonel Glenn has completed his trip... Some years ago as a Marine pilot, he raced the sun across this country- and lost. And today he won... We have a long way to go in this space race. We started late. But this is the new ocean, and I believe the United States must sail on it and be in a position second to none." Very prophetic words! Fine condition with light wear and writing on the cover. From the collection of scientist and author Charles Pellegrino.
