    Two Lunar Module Pilots Discuss Apollo Spacecraft Navigation.

    James Irwin and Alan Bean Letters Signed. This lot consists of two letters, written to the same FAA employee at the Olympia, Washington airport, in reply to questions about Apollo navigation: 1). Autograph Letter Signed "Jim Irwin Apollo 15", one page, High Flight Foundation stationery, July 26, 1979, Colorado Springs, Colorado. James Irwin (1930-1991) writes, in full: "Give my regards to your colleagues at Olympia Tower. Our navigational equipment was quite similar to the INS systems in 747. We also had capability to feed in star fixes to update inertial data. Al Worden was the navigator aboard Apollo 15 and did a superb job. Your friend from beyond the Earth,..." Irwin has added a moon drawing after his signature. Very fine condition with original mailing folds.
    2). Typed Letter Signed "Alan L Bean", one page, NASA letterhead, August 8, 1979, Houston, Texas. Bean writes, in part: "I was happy to receive your letter because I work with air traffic controllers almost weekly when I fly the T-38. It is nice to be able to tell one of them how much I appreciate his efforts. In answer to your questions, the Apollo spacecraft did not operate like a RNAV but more like an INS..." Very fine condition with original mailing folds.
