Horace Mann, the Father of Public Education, Salutes A Fellow Pioneer. Autograph Letter Signed, 2 pages, recto and verso, 4.75" by 7.5", Yellow Springs, November 3, 1853. To Lorin Andrews of the Ohio Teachers' Association. In very fine condition, although the left margin is a just a tad ragged, and a couple of tiny soft pencil dealer's notations are tucked into the corners. With typed transcription.

That you're reading this catalogue may well be the end result of the momentous work undertaken, in the mid-19th century, by Horace Mann and the recipient of this letter, Lorin Andrews, to establish universal, nonsectarian education. That struggle forms the backdrop of this letter, as Mann expresses his appreciation of Lorin's work - he had just gotten the Ohio legislature to pass the state's first property tax to support public schools - and accepts an invitation to deliver the keynote speech at the State Teacher's Association. In part: "...I thank your Society, most sincerely, for the invitation... and I sincerely hope the time has now come when I can establish cordial relations with a Society which I have long regarded with so much honor & respect. I should not suffer any ordinary occasion to take me away from the college [he was president of Antioch College]; but I consider this an extraordinary one... I shall gladly avail myself of this occasion to show the deep interest which I feel in the noble efforts of the Ohio Teachers of Common Schools." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
