    Description

Henry Wells and William G. Fargo: Signed Stock Certificate. This 12" x 8.25" engraved stock certificate is for ten shares in the "American Express Company". It was issued on May 1, 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, and signed by the President and Secretary of the company, Henry Wells and William G. Fargo, the same gentlemen who founded and operated Wells, Fargo & Company. The recipient was W. H. Clements of Cincinnati. At a capitalization of $500 per share, his ten shares were worth a hefty $5,000. It is countersigned by Treasurer Alex Holland. The graphics are quite outstanding, with a train, roundhouse, ships, delivery wagon, safe, cotton and crated goods, and a guard dog labeled "Safety & Dispatch." The signatures are dark and clear. There is some minor loss at the bottom border, as shown, and a 1" tear at the top edge, neatly repaired on verso with tape. This is a "blue chip" collectible in all respects.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
