    Description

    Henry H. Ogden Thrice Signed Document and Relics Collected on the First Around the World Flight, 1924. In a period shadow-box are two pieces of isinglass, a match-safe, and a gilt artifact, all with explanation captions. Ogden has signed under each caption. The box frame measures 10" x 12.75". The isinglass is loose, else fine.

    In the period shadow-box are: two pieces of isinglass with the caption, "This piece of isen-glass was collected from a portion of the German flag ship that now extends above the water line, after being sunk at Scappa Flow, Scotland, by Henry H. Ogden, U.S. Army World Flight, 1924."; a match-safe with the caption, "One of the very few things the Lieutenant Henry H. Ogden carried with him on the entire flight around the world was this water-proof match case which came in very handy when they had their forced landing in the Atlantic Ocean. Presented to Bob Braly with sincere best wishes."; and, a gilt artifact, captioned, "During the World Flight, Lieutenant Henry H. Ogden collected this piece of gold sprayed substance from the slab that the Sleeping Buddha rests on at Bangkok, Siam. His big toe is as big as a bed and he measures one hundred and fifty feet from the gold topknot he wears to the mother-of-pearl soles of his feet. World Flight book, pg. 181."

     

    Henry H. Ogden was a crew member aboard the Douglas World Cruiser biplane, the Boston, on the first around-the-world airplane flight. Of the four aircraft that started, only of the aircraft completed the journey and their crews became the first to circumnavigate earth. The trip totaled 175 days, covering 27,553 miles, with stops in 61 cities, the total flying time being 371 hours, 11 minutes.
