    Description

Helen Keller Typed Letter Signed. Four pages, 7.25" x 10.5", Westport [Connecticut], March 10, 1940. In 1940, Europe and Asia were engulfed in war and the United States was maintaining her isolationist policy, but struggling internally. Writing to Socialist cartoonist Art Young, "who uses his gift to blast tyranny and oppression," Keller discusses the current state of the American worker and the world at large, in part: "It amazes me daily to observe how human beings survive one cataclysm after another. I think, do you not, that the essential good in the world must outweigh the evil. Otherwise the race would have been extinct long ago. The last twenty years have seemed to me more destructive than all recorded wars put together. . . . Despite grave misgivings, I too hope America may 'stay above the battle' and leave the way open for militant organized labor to educate and unite the people for economic democracy. Never until now have I seen so vividly the naked hideousness of the wrongs endured by the workers at the bottom in this land, nor have I been so ashamed of the trade unions which will not espouse their cause. . . . but you and I realize that we are living in an era of transition . . . nothing matters so long as man's dauntless spirit and inventive brain push society onward." Unevenly toned on all pages with mat burn along the edges.

Keller (1880-1968) became deaf and blind at nineteen months, but, educated by Anne Sullivan, she learned to speak. She became a crusader for better treatment of the handicapped and attained a high distinction as a lecturer, writer, and scholar.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
