Helen Keller Typed Letter Signed and Typed Letter. Two integral pages, 5.5" x 6.75" (folded down), on United States Lines letterhead, onboard the SS President Roosevelt, April 10, 1930. Writing to Captain Theodore Van Beek (whom she incorrectly addresses as "Captain von Beck") while aboard the passenger ship President Roosevelt, Keller describes her experience visiting the bridge of the ship, in part:

"Today I had an extraordinary experience. I stood on the bridge beside the Captain, and inhaled great draughts of eternal space. Emotions crowded my mind until it seemed as if the sea were beating and surging within me. Then we visited the pilot-house, and the Captain showed me the wonderful devices that science has contrived for the safety of ships. I touched the gyro, the magnetic compass and the radio direction-finder. . . . Again I stood with the Captain on the bridge . . . I said, Walt Whitman is right - the soul of man is greater than stars or suns or universes. In imagination I saw the Captain standing on the bridge, gazing into the wide-canopied heavens and seeing the darkness sprinkled with stars, systems and galaxies. I wanted to take his hand in mine and say, "O Captain, my Captain, we are safe in the ship you command." Keller's distinctive signature is written boldly in pencil. Folds with some separation at the edges. Toned edges.

With a secondary letter to the captain, signed in type, measuring 5.5" x 6.75" (folded down), April 10, 1930, in full: "A ship is the place of ceaseless salutes - of new-comers, of departing and farewells. A great ship is that which has the greatest captain."
