    Description

"The Discoverer of Gold in California"

Gold Rush: James W. Marshall Signature on an Autograph Souvenir Card, 5.25" x 2.75".
With a small engraving titled "Old Sutter Mill". Signed "Jas. W. Marshall" above the tagline, "The Discoverer of Gold in California / January 19th, 1848." Light dampstaining and soiling. The signature is accompanied by a receipt issued on November 19, 1948 by the Wells Fargo Bank Historical Collection of San Francisco listing the item as belonging to Bert Carpender, Sr. and having an insurance value of $50.00. The receipt is stapled to a letter on Wells Fargo letterhead, one page (8.5" x 11"), November, 19, 1948, thanking Mr. Carpender for the generous loan of his Marshall autograph to be used "for display during the Centennial years." Original transmittal envelope is also present.

Marshall (1810-1885) is credited with having discovered gold in January 1848 while building a mill for John Sutter along the American River in California, thus setting the stage for the gold rush. Marshall came to work for Sutter after losing his land and prospects while serving during the Mexican War. Although he became an immediate celebrity in his time, neither Marshall nor Sutter ever profited his discovery of gold.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
