George Armstrong Custer: A Rare Personal; Check with a Terrific Large, Bold Signature. A very fine example of this rare form of Custer's autograph. Dated March 4, 1873 (the date of President Grant's second inauguration), it was cashed by Custer at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky. The Galt House was the premier hotel in Louisville and Custer had held a lavish banquet there in 1872 to honor the visiting Grand Duke Alexis of Russia. Custer frequented the hotel during the period from October 1871 through March 1873, when the 7th Cavalry was stationed nearby at Taylor Barracks in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, where they were assigned to stamp out illegal distilleries and restrain the Ku Klux Klan and the bushwhackers. Shortly after Custer cashed this check, he and the 7th would depart from Kentucky for their rendezvous with destiny in the Black Hills of Dakota Territory.

The check apparently was accidentally torn in half vertically, as a paper repair was made on the verso prior to the check being stamped as "Paid" by the Louisville bank. It is otherwise in fine condition, with an appealing display presence. 7" x 2.75".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
