"The rendezvous occurred near the twin stars!"

Gemini 6A: Wally Schirra's Handwritten and Signed Memories of this Historic Mission. A one full page handwritten letter on his personal letterhead, 8.5" x 11", November 4, 2004, Rancho Santa Fe, California, to a collector describing his memories of the 1965 flight. Schirra, one of the original "Mercury Seven" astronauts was the only one to fly on Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo missions. Full text follows. Very desirable and in excellent condition.

"I have fond memories of my Gemini 6 mission. There were three attempts to launch and the third time was a charm. Tom Stafford and I performed the first rendezvous in space using Gemini 7 as our target.

"Years of simulations and engineering meetings came to fruition on 15 December 1965. The flight control team and orbital technicians in Mission Control made it seem easy. We named the mission, in a way, as the rendezvous in the sixth hour of the solar pattern where the constellation Orion dominated and nearby were the twin stars called Gemini, Castor and Pollux. The rendezvous occurred near the twin stars!

"We closed to within one foot of Gemini 7 and we noticed that Lovell and Borman needed a shave. A lot of loose debris, from staging, was visible on the rear of Gemini 7. Tom and I thought, at first, it was their dirty laundry. After over six hours of formation flight, Gemini Six separated from Gemini Seven, and a few hours later GT-6 went through retrofire and a successful guided reentry to land near the aircraft carrier. Tom and I were hoisted aboard the carrier while still in our spacecraft. Again a Happy Landing! Wally Schirra. GT-6 Commander".
