    Description

Frederick Douglass Autograph Letter Signed "Frederick Douglass." One page, 5" x 8", Washington D. C, October 3, 1889, to F. H. Johnson, answering a question Johnson seems to have asked about being pelted by an egg during a lecture in 1842. Douglass responds, in full:

"I did lecture in Tioga County, in company with Ezra Smith but except the town of Pitcher I cannot name the particular places and while I remember to have been hooted and noisily treated in several places during that tour I do not think I was at anytime struck by an egg - I may however mention that at that time we who spoke against slavery were often a target for eggs and sometimes eggs that were unfit for the table."

In 1842, Douglas was a traveling lecturer with the American Anti-Slavery Society where he traveled throughout the west and Midwest. In 1889, he was consul-general to the Republic of Haiti. Very fine.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
