Frederick Douglass Autograph Letter Signed "Fredk Douglass." One page, 5" x 8", Rochester [New York], January 20, 1862, likely to William Marks, an abolitionist from Naples, New York. Douglass, negotiating a lecture invitation, writes in part:

"I shall be very glad to come to Naples and give a lecture 'on the war' about the middle of Feb - Provided the sum of ten dollars and my travelling expenses can be guaranteed me. My paper [Douglass' Monthly] does not support me - and I am compelled to charge something for my lectures. Please write me and let me know what you will do."

By the time this letter was written, Frederick Douglass had been using his fiery pen and powerful voice for twenty-one years in the U.S. and abroad to fight slavery. He used his pen to write Douglass' Monthly, his abolitionist newspaper which was published from 1858 through 1863, and he used his voice on the lecture circuit at places such as Naples. This letter is on lined paper, age-toned with minor stains. One fold has been repaired with tape on the verso. Also on the verso is a remnant of the original red seal.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
