Frank James: A Fine Single-Page Pencil Autograph Letter Signed, Written to Annie. The letter, signed "Frank" was written from jail in Gallatin, Missouri on December 19, 1883, while he awaited his trial for murder and armed robbery. "I hope you read my letter today," he writes. "I am waiting very impatiently to hear from Judge Goodman. Should he decide in our favor I hope I will have the pleasure of spending the holidays with my dear one... . Surely Judge G will dispose of my case one way or the other. Let it come. I am anxious... ."
Frank had surrendered on October 4, 1882 in a deal under which he would stand trial in Missouri, but not be extradited to Minnesota to be tried for the notorious, deadly Northfield bank robbery. It proved to be a wise move. Although Frank would wait until February 11th for his trial, he believed that he had too much support in Missouri to be convicted by a jury. To the great surprise of the national press, the trial ended with a verdict of not guilty.

The letter shows in excellent condition and is clearly readable, but it has been professionally backed to stabilize the fragile paper. Even toning to a tan shade. Single-page letters such as this one are often preferred by collectors for their displayability.
