Frank Butler: A Letter, a Postcard and Two Envelopes in his Hand. Two envelopes and a postcard addressed by Frank Butler to his brother, Will, along with two short letters and a fragment (page 8) of a longer one. One of the short letters, written from England in 1891, is worth quoting in full for its content: "Dear Brother Yours to hand please contradict report in papers about Annie's death. she is in splendid health We are game shooting here wildfowl is very plenty We join Buffalo Bill in April again, in Germany with love from Annie I am yours Frank E Butler". He adds, "permanent address in England 151 New Bond St London" (the business address of Charles Lancaster, the great gun maker who first custom-fitted a shoulder arm for Annie Oakley).

A Cincinnati newspaper, seeing a wire service report on the death of a singer named Anna Oatley, had mistakenly assumed the worst and headlined a story: "Poor Annie Oakley Dies in a Far-Off Land." Frank dashed off a dozen cables in response, including one to a devastated Buffalo Bill. Cody's letter back to Frank and Annie (preserved in the Annie Oakley Center at the Garst Museum, Greenville, Ohio) finished with "I'm so glad our Annie ain't dead, ain't you?" Very good condition, except the postcard is clearly torn in half. This lot will be accompanied by a family letter of provenance.
