    Description

Ford's Theatre: Ticket Seller Joseph S. Sessford Letters. Two letters and a transmittal envelope, all written by J. S. Sessford, the ticket seller at Ford's Theatre on the night of the assassination. Both are addressed to Mr. E. Rosenburger (a.k.a. Al Fostell) of New York City. The first is a 4-page letter written on October 21, 1894 offering to sell a variety of assassination mementoes for $50 ("Now I think the offer is a reasonable one for so many valuable relics which cannot be had elsewhere... Yours truly, J. S. Sessford." The other letter is also 4 pages, dated February 14, 1895. Sessford replies to Rosenburger's inquiry about "... whether I have anything of interest to dispose of." He confirms that he has, offering keys to the lower boxes of Ford's Theatre, several playbills, an autograph album of "... nearly one hundred celebrated actors and actresses" and more. He advises that he has written to another collector and will accept the highest bid and further requests that his name not be used in connection with the Smithsonian Institution when discussing items sold by him to Rosenburger. Formerly in the A. E. Fostell-Ed Emerson Collection.
