Ford's Theatre: Henry R. Rathbone Document Signed. As a fitting accompaniment to the Clara Harris letter being offered, consider this piece signed by the man who escorted her to Ford's Theatre and later murdered her. 7 ¾" x 9 ¾" printed form with blank integral leaf, "War Department, Provost Marshal General's Bureau" letterhead, Washington, D.C., May 16, 1866, signed "H. R. Rathbone" as "Major and A.A.G. in charge of Dist'g Branch". Major Rathbone informs F. F. Sanborn, Receiver of Commutation Money in Augusta, Maine, that his authorization to collect commutation money is terminated, since there is no longer any need for the service. Rathbone struggled with Booth after the shot was fired, trying to subdue him or, at least, impede his progress. He was slashed with a knife in the ensuing scuffle. While serving as U.S. Consul in Hanover, Germany, something "snapped" and he killed his wife. He spent the remainder of his life in a facility for the insane.
