    Description

Edward H. White II Photo Signed to Baseball Legend Monty Stratton "To Monty Stratton- I enjoyed meeting you during your visit to the Manned Spacecraft Center. Edward H White II" in blue felt-tip. This 10" x 8" official NASA glossy photo pictures White with a group of touring former baseball stars in town on October 6, 1965 for Oldtimers Day, including Dizzy Dean, Monty Stratton, and Lefty Grove. White was the first U.S. astronaut to conduct a spacewalk during the Gemini 4 mission just a few months before this photo was taken. He was tragically killed in the Apollo 1 training accident in January 1967. Also included in this lot are seven other color NASA glossies of various scenes from this Oldtimers convention and two additional NASA lithographed photos, all 10" x 8" in size. All items are in very fine condition; the signed White photo has a bit of crinkling on two corners.

Texas-born Monty Stratton was a pitcher for the Chicago White Sox from 1934-1938 where he was named to the American League All-Star squad in 1937. A hunting accident in late 1938 led to the amputation of his right leg after which he stayed on with the White Sox as a coach and batting practice pitcher. He then started a semipro team in Greenville, Texas to keep fit and stay connected with the game he loved so much. Stratton stunned the sports world in 1946 when he returned to pitching, winning eighteen games in Class C ball at Sherman, Texas. His inspiring story was told in an Academy Award-winning 1949 movie, The Stratton Story, with James Stewart in the title role.
