Description

"We have really been on the go getting Apollo 1 ready to fly."

Ed White II Autograph Letter Signed and Signed Color Photo Directly from the Jim Rathmann Collection. In May 1966, Jim Rathmann invited several of his astronaut friends to the running of the Indianapolis 500 (Graham Hill won, by the way). Ed White was one of those who went. On June 23rd, he sent a thank you note of two pages on his personal 6.25" x 7" notepaper. Fine condition with one fold and light wear. It reads, in full:

"Dear Jim and Kay,/ I want to thank you/ for the great time that I/ had at the Indianapolis '500'./ The manner in which you/ arranged for us to see the /race was really something. In/ the short time that I was/ at the track I really/ felt I learned a lot about/ the 'Big Race'. Please excuse/ my tardiness in writing,/ but we have really been/ on the go getting Apollo 1/ ready to fly. Also, please/ excuse our rapid departure/ after the race, but we had/ an appointment in Mass. and/ were a little concerned about/ being able to get up to Bunker Hill.

"I am enclosing some/ pictures that I thought/ you might enjoy. We should/ be moving our spacecraft to/ the Cape later in the summer/ for final check out- see/ you then. Thanks again- Ed".

Very poignant content. Note that he mentions getting Apollo1 "ready to fly" and also moving it down to the Cape for "final check out". Sadly, White, Grissom, and Chaffee would perish in a tragic fire during a launch pad test on January 27, 1967.

Also included in this lot is one of the photos mentioned in the letter- a 7" x 6" color photo of White's historic Gemini 4 spacewalk glued to a 10" x 7.5" matboard. He has signed: "To Jim and Kay-/ With best personal regards/ Thanks for the great time at the '500'/ Edward H. White II/ Gemini IV ??".The photo and the inscription are both considerably faded.
