Dr. William W. Mayo Prescription Ledger Book. The origins of what is now the Mayo Clinic date back to the last years of the Civil War. In 1863, British-born Dr. William W. Mayo arrived in Rochester, Minnesota, to work as an examining surgeon for the Union Army draft board. He loved the town so much that he settled there and, after the war, opened a medical practice. Mayo retired in 1892. His sons, William and Charles, joined the practice in the 1880s. With the addition of Dr. Augustus Stinchfield in 1892, the elder Mayo retired. The group was soon joined by Drs. Graham, Plummer, Millet, Judd, and Balfour and the Mayo Clinic was born.

Measuring an impressive 14" x 21.5", this large ledger contains over 100 pages of prescriptions which span the years 1866 through at least 1870 (the final seventeen pages contain prescriptions that are undated). Each of the pages is covered with scrip from the early days of Dr. Mayo's Rochester practice and signed by him. The majority of prescriptions are directed to O.W. Anderson, a druggist and chemist located in Rochester, for drugs to help with various ailments. In addition to those from Mayo, other area physicians are represented (though the bulk does appear to be from Mayo's office) and several are signed by an "M.S." as well as Drs. Plummer (possibly the Plummer mentioned above), Galloway, Cross, Smith, et al.

The ledger book itself is bound in the original marbled paper over boards with a leather spine covering. The boards are heavily worn, but the binding is sound.
