    D. L. Anderson AKA "Billy Wilson," Billy the Kid Gang Member. Anderson was a classic example of a frontier character who played both sides of the law. At various times he was a cowboy, livery stable proprietor, rancher, rustler, customs inspector, and ultimately sheriff. In 1881 he was indicted for passing of counterfeit money around Lincoln County, New Mexico and found himself a fugitive. Wilson then became a part of Billy the Kid's gang. He was quickly arrested by Pat Garrett and convicted, but he escaped and decamped for South Texas where his family had moved in his youth. Reclaiming his real name, D. L. Anderson married, started a family, and apparently led a virtuous life as a rancher in Uvalde County. Pat Garrett helped him to obtain a pardon from President Cleveland in 1896, and he eventually became sheriff of Terrell County, where he was killed in the line of duty in 1918. His murderer, Ed Valentine, was lynched within an hour of the deed. Offered here is a 1915 document signed by Anderson as Tax Collector of Terrell County (11" x 11.5", and in generally good condition with a couple small interior tears). Also included is an outstanding signed, typed account of Anderson's killing in Harrel's Saloon by R. M. Garthen, constable of Terrell County.
