Clara Barton Typed Letter Signed "Clara Barton". One page, 8.25" x 11" on American Red Cross letterhead, Washington, D.C., March 28, 1900, to W. W. Howard (William Willard Howard), New York. In this letter Clara Barton, nurse and organizer of the American Red Cross, expresses dissatisfaction with what is likely the genesis of the Congressional bill chartering the American Red Cross. Other than evidence of old fold creases, the letter bears a bold signature and is in fine condition. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.

    More Information:

She writes in part: "The Senate bill was as near right as any present scotched Red Cross bill could be. I have long ceased to have much interest in it. Not only bodies but spirits wear out. The House bill has received its additions, doubtless some of them through unfriendly interest, others through ignorance. There is yet one more sieve for a last screening, but whether for the better or the worse, remains to be seen...I'm glad you took up India. I wish it were with the Red Cross..." William W. Howard was a wealthy New Yorker who took up many humanitarian relief efforts, most notably in Armenia.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
