Clara Barton prepares for Red Cross Conference in Russia ALS: "Your loving sister/Clara Barton, 4p, 4.75" x 7 3/4". Glen Echo, April 23 [1902]. To "Dearest Sister Harriet." In part: "It has come to light that the conference is to open according to 'Old Style'- which makes thirteen (13) days difference. Thus instead of May 16 - it is to be May 29- It had been arranged by Dr Senn to sail May 1st on the Savoire for Havre- but since the change, the day of sailing has not been set, but most likely ten or twelve days later...All state arrangements are, I think made for the journey...Admiral Van Reypen will lunch with us today. Mrs. Foster is to have a reception this week and then sails by herself in advance as she had engaged her passage before the others...I shall write you at once when we hear the day of sailing. If you can spare so much time, don't make any change in your plans...." "Clara Barton/Apl 23 1902" penned in unknown hand at upper right of first page. . As President of the American Red Cross, Clara Barton headed the United States delegation to the Seventh International Conference of the Red Cross held in St. Petersburg, Russia, May 16-June 4 (May 29-June 22), 1902. The Julian calendar was in use in most of the world until Pope Gregory XIII instituted what has become known as the Gregorian calendar in 1582. Most Catholic countries followed suit. England and her colonies didn't adopt the new calendar until 1752. Russia used the Julian calendar until 1918, hence the difference in days. Dr. Nicholas Senn, one of the U.S. delegates, also visited Red Cross hospitals while in Russia. Admiral William K. Van Reypen, Surgeon General of the Navy, and Mrs. J. Ellen Foster, the first woman to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court, were also members of the U.S. delegation. Folds, else in very fine condition. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
