Clara Barton Annotated Article "Red Cross Relief For the Reconcentrado Orphans of Cuba", Circa 1899. Four pages, printed, 6" x 9". Ms Barton has annotated her article at the top of the first page: "This is an extract from an Article I wrote very hastily for the Independent by request as early as August or Sept. I have written nothing since although there were volumes that could be written." Spain's reconcentrado policy in Cuba left tens of thousands of starving, suffering orphans to their fate and has been called the Cuban Holocaust. Barton estimated that 50,000 orphans died as a result of the policy. The pamphlet has toned, there are old fold creases, with a short closed tear just starting on the right edge in two of the vertical creases, otherwise Barton's annotation is bright and legible. Very good condition. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.
