    Description

Chris Madsen Autograph Court Document Signed "C. Madsen" as a deputy U.S. Marshal. Two partially-printed pages, 8.25" x 14", Oklahoma, June 29, 1909. Frontier lawman Madsen has signed and engrossed this U.S. marshal's return for a circuit court case from the Eastern District of Oklahoma (United States of America v. Claude M. Aman, et al.) stating that he "made diligent search for the within named Defendant R. Barton in my District, but am unable to find the said defendant." Madsen has signed with a bold signature. An unengrossed copy of the document is attached by paper clip with a typed note, "Please serve on part checked." This document is toned with smoothed folds.

Chris Madsen (1851-1944), a scoundrel in his younger years in Denmark, migrated to the U.S. where he joined the army to fight Indians and, later, served as a deputy U.S. marshal in Oklahoma. Along with fellow deputy U.S. marshals Bill Tilghman and Heck Thomas - a trio known as the Three Guardsmen - he brought many bandits and outlaws in the Indian Territory to justice and building a reputation as a terror to evildoers.
