    Description

Charlie Chaplin Signed Sketch "Sincerely Charlie Chaplin". On a 3.5" x 3.25" portion of a lined index card, Chaplin has drawn his hat, his cane and his shoes, all in brown ink underneath the inscription. The story goes that sometime in February 1914, Chaplin borrowed Fatty Arbuckle's giant trousers, Charles Avery's tiny jacket, Ford Sterling's size 14 shoes, a too-small derby belonging to Arbuckle's father-in-law, and a moustache intended for Mack Swain's use, which he trimmed to toothbrush size. According to Ted Tetrick, Chaplin's Hollywood producer and costumier at the time, the hat and cane were originally in the Keystone Studio's costume department and were personally selected by Chaplin. And so one of Hollywood's most endearing characters was born: "The Tramp." This past June, Chaplin's hat and cane sold at auction for a record-setting $139,250. You can have Chaplin's drawing of his hat and cane, with a pair of shoes thrown in, for much less. Matted with a photograph of Chaplin as "The Tramp" and framed to an overall size of 16.75" x 14". Very good condition, with slight fading to the signature.
