    Description

Charles Lindbergh Typed Letter Signed. One page, 8.5" x 11", Westport, Connecticut, January 30, 1945, addressed to Kenneth J. "Boedy" Boedecker or Wright Aeronautical Corporation in New Jersey. The pilot of the Spirit of St. Louis thanks Boedy for letting him know that a valve for the Spirit had arrived. Lightly toned paper with smoothed folds. The text of the letter reads in full:

"Many thanks for your January twenty-seventh letter telling me that the Spirit of St. Louis valve arrived from Cartier. I wish Anne and I could accept your invitation for a dinner and show in New York, but unfortunately, I must leave for the west tomorrow and my go as far as California before I return. I am afraid we shall have to ask for a rain check for the time being."

Kenneth Boedecker, an aviator himself who had a long career with Wright Aeronautical Corporation, was the service engineer who prepared the Spirit of St. Louis for Lindbergh's famous flight from New York to Paris in 1927.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
