Apollo 16 Crew-Signed Insurance Cover from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Charlie Duke. The three bold signatures, "Charlie Duke", "John Young", and "Ken Mattingly", all in blue felt-tip, are neatly placed on this philatelic cover of approximately 6.5" x 3.5" in size. Included is a signed Letter of Authenticity from Duke that explains the history of these covers: "This is to certify that this is an authentic 'insurance cover' signed by the crew of Apollo 16 a few days before our launch. The covers were left with our team leader to be postmarked after our liftoff. This cover is embossed with the design of the Apollo 16 flight emblem flanked by the NASA astronaut emblem. All of the 'insurance covers' were of the same design. It is postmarked at Kennedy Space Center in the PM on April 16, 1972, our launch day. During the days of Apollo, life insurance that would cover a flight to the Moon and return was prohibitively expensive, so the notion of an 'insurance cover' was born. In the unlikely event of a disaster that claimed the lives of the crew, these covers would take the place of an insurance policy for our families... These covers were divided among the crew when we returned. This one has remained a part of my personal collection to this day." Excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
