    Description

Annie Oakley: Important Autograph Letter Signed, to her Brother-in-law William Butler. In the few months before they died, both Frank and Annie suffered from physical and mental breakdowns. They also were miserable and irritable when together and miserable and uneasy when apart. This letter to "Dear Willie" vividly illustrates Annie's dilemma with Frank so ill: "But no one suspected that he was losing his mind at times & could not make him out until his break down came. And now [he] is stronger and alright. Talks well & treats me alright except when he goes off." But it also shows how lovingly considerate she was of her husband of over forty years: "I found a Friend of his of long standing who is here for the big shoot. Frank helped him out many times in past years to win at shoots & he will get tickets & I ask him to engage a state room for Frank. I will pay for it & Frank will think that he has been invited to share it with his Friend and in that way he will be seen safe to where he is bent on going . . ." The letter is signed "Annie c/o Mrs. Rush Blakeley RR2 -- Versailles Ohio for 2 weeks. If I live that long." The letter itself, 5' x 6.5", is in excellent condition. The envelope is rough and written in pencil. This lot will be accompanied by a family letter of provenance.
