Amelia Earhart Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 5.25" x 7", written while at sea onboard the SS Ile de France, June 19, 1932. Nearly four weeks to the day earlier, Earhart, at the age of 34 years, became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Having set off from Newfoundland, Canada, she touched down near Derry, Northern Ireland, fifteen hours later. She was returning to the United States when she wrote this letter to Mrs. Paul Wienges, in part: "It was good of you to write me. As you see I am homeward bound and am finding, on shipboard, the first opportunity to acknowledge your and others' greetings. . . . please tell the Junior League members I'll be glad to tell them about trans-Atlantic hops, if they wish to hear, whenever I am again in your part of the country." For her solo flight, Earhart received the Distinguished Flying Cross (from the U.S. Congress), the Gold Medal of the National Geographic Society (from President Hoover), and the Cross of Knight of the Legion of Honor (from the French government). With the original transmittal envelope.
